Project ACHIEVE offers a variety of education opportunities in the form of presentations, workshops, and activities. The following is a description of topics that can be presented on
as requested:

HIV 101
This is a presentation to inform community members of basic HIV knowledge, including how HIV is transmitted, how to protect oneself from infection, and the phases of HIV infection. There are a number of interactive activities that are utilized with this presentation.
Materials: Flip chart or chalk/white board

HIV Vaccines 101
This presentation outlines the basics of HIV vaccine research. The process of clinical trials, including human clinical trials is discussed. Current issues related to vaccine research are discussed, such as the Step study, community concerns, and testing “false positive”.
Materials: PowerPoint capabilities and projector

Negotiating Safer Sex
This interactive workshop helps participants to feel comfortable discussing sex and empowering ways to request safer sex with partners. Tips are provided for making safer sex sexier and more erotic.
Materials: No additional materials needed

Black Community and Medical Research
This presentation provides a historical perspective to allow participants to understand the legacy of abuses the Black community has endured at the hands of researchers, doctors,
and other medical professionals. This history is the framework in which Blacks navigate the medical field and medical research, and it is validated and clarified through this presentation.
Materials: PowerPoint capabilities and projector

Women of Color and HIV Risk
This workshop discusses the issues that cause women of color to disproportionately bare the burden of HIV. Moving beyond sexual activity, the discussion reaches deeper into the issues that plague women and leave this population vulnerable. Lack of accurate information, personal agency to control ones sexual experience and self esteem are all issues that are too
often left out of the conversation about HIV infection. They are the core of this dialogue.
Materials: DVD viewing capabilities and flip chart or chalk/white Board

The Brothers Project
This presentation outlines the disproportionate numbers of HIV infection rates among Black men who have sex with men (MSM) and the social and community issues that may be causing these dramatically disproportionate rates. The community-level intervention that
is being implemented in New York City is comprised of referral of sexual network partners, counseling and testing of HIV and other STIs, screening for substance use and mental
health problems and counseling/care if necessary, and facilitating access to HIV and
STI treatment and health care.
Materials: PowerPoint capabilities and projector

Sexy Gay Activism
The presentation is geared toward men who have sex with men; it is very brief and utilizes imagery to review the history of activism in the gay community as a lifestyle, and the benefits that have come from those efforts. It demonstrates how activism of today can be a regular expression of a man’s life and personality. It can be sexy, comedic, business casual,
political, or any other way a man wants to express it. Volunteerism is a very important form of activism and should not be overlooked as men are determining how to participate in the fight against HIV/AIDS.
Materials: Powerpoint capabilities and projector
