Recent news about HIV vaccines:
In September 2009, some exciting news was released. A large study in Thailand showed that a vaccine against HIV is possible. People who received the study vaccine were 31% less likely to get HIV than those who got placebo. The effect was quite modest but will help to move the HIV vaccine field forward.
In Fall 2007, results from the STEP study showed that the vaccine did not prevent HIV infection and did not reduce the amount of virus in those study participants who became infected with HIV during the trial. The study also showed that men who got the Ad5 study vaccine and were not circumcised had more HIV infections than those who got placebo. We do not fully understand what the STEP Study results mean. We are still looking at the study results to try to learn more.
We do know that it is NOT possible to get HIV from the vaccine.
